Swisse Wellness Case Study

Swisse Carbon NeutralNdevr Environmental worked closely with Swisse in compiling their carbon neutral application. Swisse required a team of technical consultants who could promptly understand the complexities of their business and guide them through the detailed NCOS application process. Ndevr Environmental embedded a consultant onsite to co-ordinate with relevant departments, facilitate data collection, and to correspond with suppliers on behalf of Swisse. This allowed Swisse to focus on their core business without significant interruption.

Swisse have been delighted with the efforts and guidance provided by the team at Ndevr in achieving our Carbon Neutral accreditation under NCOS. Ndevr Environmental’s technical knowledge, strong policy background and personable approach gave us utmost confidence in completing the application on our behalf. We would highly recommend them as experts in carbon and energy sector.

About Swisse

Swisse is dedicated to providing scientifically proven natural supplements to help people live healthier and happier lives. Maintaining environmentally responsible business practises is a natural extension of this overall philosophy, to care for people and the planet.

Swisse recently submitted its application for extension of NCOS licence for the 2012/13 financial year to the Program Administrator, the Department of Environment. The total estimated carbon footprint for the reporting year is 2,225 t/CO2-e. Carbon offset units have been purchased and voluntarily surrendered totalling 2,225 t/CO2-e units on the official Markit registry.
Swisse have voluntarily offset all carbon emissions associated with business operations. The Swisse organisation continues to remain carbon neutral under the Australian Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS).

Ndevr Environmental's Methodology

Embedding a consultant within Swisse, and maintaining regular communication enabled a close working relationship to be established. This allowed information to be collected efficiently from internal and external sources, leading the project to be completed within a short time frame.
The carbon footprint for Swisse was calculated in accordance with NCOS guidelines using the principles set out in the GHG Protocol. These are consistent with relevant Australian and international standards including the AS ISO 14064 and ISO 14040 series. The carbon emissions inventory includes major activities associated with daily operations of running the Swisse organisation.
Ndevr Environmental are continuing to work with Swisse to reduce energy consumption and emissions. Part of the NCOS application included the development of an Emissions Management Plan (EMP).
Going forward Swisse intend to undertake six monthly reporting to monitor emissions being generated. Swisse will also move towards offsetting emissions in advance for each period.

About NCOS

NCOS Logo

The National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS) was introduced by the Australian Government in 2010. The purpose of NCOS is to provide consumer confidence through a nationally recognised framework. The two primary functions of NCOS are to provide guidance on what is considered a genuine voluntary offset, and to set minimum requirements for calculating, auditing and offsetting the carbon footprint of an organisation, product or event to achieve ‘carbon neutrality’.

The NCOS framework represents an excellent alignment with Swisse corporate social responsibility objectives. Swisse aims to operate in accordance with current best practise across all operational elements of the business. The NCOS framework is recognised as the official carbon offset standard within Australia.

Swisse’ Carbon Offsets - The Tasmanian Native Forest Protection Project

Offsets for the 2012/13 year were surrendered retrospectively in line with the submission of the NCOS application. For Scope 1 emissions premium grade offsets previously purchased and cancelled in excess for 2010/11 and 2011/12 financial years were used. However, for Scope 2 and 3 emissions, a mix of previously cancelled units as well as a combination of new standard and new premium grade units were sourced.

Tasmanian Native Forest

The Tasmanian Native Forest Protection Project is unique in Australia. It involves the protection of large tracks of privately owned land in the Tasmanian Central Highlands. The land is currently degraded native forest which has been logged in the past. Without any carbon revenue, this area would continue to be logged into the future. Purchasing carbon credits from this project helps to protect and restore Tasmania’s valuable native forests and natural habitat for surrounding flora and fauna.
